overview of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect and its implications
for higher-density, transit-oriented environments. Included are
case studies and guidelines developed for a range of cities to
not only mitigate the effects of the UHI effect but also create
more livable, attractive, and comfortable places.

history of residential hotels in the United States, from "palace"
hotels like the Waldorf-Astoria to more modest and ubiquitous
lodging houses. It further considers the potential for the re-emergence
of hotels with residential components - something that is already
happening in the market in a variety of forms.
