This presentation provides an overview of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect and its implications for higher-density, transit-oriented environments. Included are case studies and guidelines developed for a range of cities to not only mitigate the effects of the UHI effect but also create more livable, attractive, and comfortable places.

The Residential Hotel as a Re-emerging Housing Type

Presented at the 2004 Rail~volution national planning conference, Los Angeles, CA.

This presentation reviews the history of residential hotels in the United States, from "palace" hotels like the Waldorf-Astoria to more modest and ubiquitous lodging houses. It further considers the potential for the re-emergence of hotels with residential components - something that is already happening in the market in a variety of forms.

This tour allows one to compare large-scale contemporary suburban mixed use developments that use different planning and urban design approaches. The emphasis is an understanding of how urban design and architecture play significant roles in creating successful, coherent, mixed-use development and "place-making," but how they cannot make up for shortcomings in site planning.
